is amount$948,760.52 is the value of the suppliesdonated to and shipped by the Red Crossand $480,000.67 the value of the suppliespurchased and shipped by the Red Crosson its own account. The thing that stands out in thiswork of shipping is that a great mass ofsupplies is being sent abroad by smallcommittees which have learned to usethe shipping facilities of the three largecommittees. These same agencies, andthe committees for Germany, Serbia, Ar-menia, and Poland, and the Jewishpeople, also serve as central agenciesfrom which money may be forwarded.In cases where this is done, the moneyis used, if possible, for purchasing sup-plies within the country to be benefited. Many committees have also learned touse the purchasing facilities of thelarger committees. This is done in twoways. Any committee may purchase atcost, from the clearing house materialswhich may be made up, by their ownworkers, into clothing or hospital sup-plies. That is, a small committeemay send a designated donation to anyone of the three large committees: tothe Red Cross for the purchase of hospi-tal supplies, food and clothing; to thecommission for food and clothing—thisfall chiefly for a special diet for Belgianchildren; and to the clearing house forsupplies of any kind. But as a general rule the local com-mittees, those that have the interest ofsmall groups of people, and that pur-chase in variety and in quite small quan-tities will doubtless find it more economi-cal of time and money to gather up theirsupplies from their own vicinities.
