The situation wasprecarious ; no preparations had been madeto guard against invasion from the Germanfrontier. The East Africa Protectorate Force,which was under the command of Lieut.-Col.L. E. S. Ward, D.S.O., consisted of the 3rdBattalion Kings African Rifles and part of the1st Battalion of the same regiment. It num-bered about 1,200. Many of the rank and file for service against the Germans. They werein Jubaland, maintaining order among unrulySomali on the borders of Italian Somaliland.*They had to be brought from distant stations,embarked at Kismayu, and thence taken byboat to Mombasa : and it was not until Sep-tember that they reached the front.
