Lawnuice was given localcommand of the British force and in a series ofengagements early in August the Turks werecompletely defeat«id, their casualties amountingto 50 p«»r cent, of the troops engaged. Theenemy retired to El Arish. The British linewas then advanced and the building of therailway, and the laying of water pipes, waspushed on energetically. The result of muchpreparation was seen in December, 1916, whenthe British reoccupied El Arish, and defeatedat Maghdaba, south of El Arish, a Turkishcolunui 2,000 strong, over 1,300 men beingmade prisoners. The Maghdaba success wasfollowed by another British advance, and onJan. 9, 1917, the Turks were driven from Rafa,on the borders of Palestine. Thus northernSinai was completely cleared of the enemy. It was not only by direct attacks upon Egyptthat the Turks sought to threaten British com-munications with India and the Far East. As early as Novem-ber, 1914, Ottoman troops from Yemen enteredthe Aden Protectorate, and from Sheikh Saidmade an attempt to seize Perim, an island inthe Straits of Bab-el-Mandeb. In Jxily, 1915,an attempt to prevent the Turks from occupyingLahej, a town some 25 miles north of Aden,proved unsuccessful, and the British were forcedto retreat: Two months later the Turksencamped near Aden were severely handled byIndian troops and steps were taken whichensured to the British control of the landwardapproaches to the port. The Turks, however,remained in possession of most of the Aden pro-tectorate and the situation had not materiallyaltered at the close of 1916.
