the 2nd Australian Light HorseBrigade was due at Kantara on the 23rd. Such was the position as viewed from a dis-tance. In practice the protection of the waterand railway parties, with the force at the com-mand of Gen. Wiggin, led to a dangerousweakening of the British posts. The force sentto Katia was too small and too isolated to haveany real chance against a sudden attack by alarge enemy body, and it was not till it was toolate that the British Intelligence Servicelearned that the enemy were in strength nearthe borders of Katia. On April 21, as has beenseen, the 5th IMounted Brigade held three posts,separated by several miles of heavy sand ; thesame day a fourth post was occupied.
