resent themajesty of the law in this peaceable and well-orderedisland. Dutch-Creole was once the prevailing language,many of the planters being of Dutch descent. Thepresent population of nine hundred consists almostentirely of negroes, who speak English. They arerepresented in the Colonial Council of St. Thomas andSt. John by three members, one appointed by thegovernment and two elected by the people. Onlyon horseback and not without a certain sense of fearcan one ride along the pathways of the steep cliffs andmountains. Probably on account of the difficult roadsand the distance between the estates, social life isvirtually nil. Camel Mountain, the highest peak in St. John,affords a fine view over the whole country, the sea, andsurrounding islands. So bracing and deliciously cool isthe atmosphere at the summit that one seems to be inanother climate. Of the several bays running inshoreRif Bay is the most famous, on account of the Caribinscriptions on the neighbouring rocks. But there is
