s thisone proclaim its uses and purposes. It is, itself, a magnificent dis-play of forest products, built entirely of wood and joined togetherwith wooden pins; not a single nail or other piece of metal wasused in its construction. It is entirely surrounded by a great col-onnade, the roof of which is upheld by pillars, each composed of agroup of three tree trunks, lopped with their branches, but withtheir bark still on them as they stood in their native forest. Va-rious States of the Union and many foreign countries contributedthese columns, and thus is formed one of the most unique colon- i84 AGRICULTURE. nades ever built. The walls of the building are of slabs of treesfrom which the bark has been removed, and the facings and otherparts of the building are treated in a similar rustic manner. The vestibule at the main doorway in the east side was furnishedand put in place by the Southern Lumber Manufacturers Associa-tion. The vestibule is of cypress and yellow pine, highly polished,to show the susceptibility of the woods of this section to use for in-terior decorations. The cost of this main vestibule was ^10,000.About half of the States of the Union and many foreign countriesexhibit here. Missouri is at the left of the entrance and Washing- AGRICULTURE. 185 ton at the right, the first exhibiting largely deciduous trees andthe other evergreen varieties. Michigans display contains thelargest load of logs ever piled upon a single vehicle; the loadv^eighed 300,000 pounds, and was pulled by two horses weighing1,700 pounds each.
