Then sheclosed the book and put it back on the shelf.Then she threw^ open the window and drew backthe curtains, and put out all the lights excepttwo scented candles that burned with a whitetire under a round mirror with a silver frame,opposite the window. And into that mirror themoon shone wliite and full, filling all the S()aceof it, so that the room was steeped in a strangesilver lig^ht. Now the whole room seemedto sway gently, waving and treml)ling; and asit trembled it sounded and rang with a lowsilver music, as if it were filled with the wavesof the sea. Then the princess took a great silver basin,covered ^s^ith stranu^e black sii^ns and fifruresraised in the silver.
