Afterhaving devoted several years to monastic pursuits, he deter-mined to lead the life of an Anchoret, and retired to a se-cluded spot in Cornwall, with only one attendant, Barius,The spot which he selected for his retreat, is described bythe monkish historians as one which abounded in streams,and which was enclosed on every side by lofty hills andalmost impenetrable woods.
