Whatever theFederals may have lost in morale under Pope wasfully restored under McClellan, who, on resumingcommand, was received by the troops with un-bounded enthusiasm. Among the Confederates thespirit could not have been higher: their successeshad been astonishing; their leaders were idolized;to a large extent their needs had been supplied fromtheir captures. Though still lacking many things,they had come to regard the Federal generals astheir commissaries, and expected to make good alllacks from new seizures.
