HISTORY OF THE FITZWILLTAM MUSEUM. 2 I I The first stone was laid by the Vice-Chancellor, GilbertAinslie, D.D., Master of Pembroke College, on Thursday, 2November, 1837. The following account of the ceremony1 isworth quotation : At twelve oclock the members of the University assembled in theSenate-House, and at about half-past twelve they walked in proces-sion round the Senate-House Yard, and thence down the centre ofTrumpington Street to the site of the Museum. A considerable portion of the site had been inclosed, and fitted upwith stages, one of which was appropriated to ladies, another toMembers of the Senate, a third to undergraduates, and a fourth togentlemen not members of the University. The stone which had been prepared for the occasion was from theIsle of Portland, and weighed nearly five tons. After it had beenelevated to the height of about four feet, the Vice Chancellor read thefollowing inscript
