de Man, Mr. J. Z. Mazel, and someother gentlemen were sent to Paris to bring backthe Dutch pictures. Louis XVIII refused hisconsent, fearing to make himself unpopular; butwith the aid of Wellington the committee succeededin recovering most of their treasures. Only sixty-eight of the paintings, fortunately the least impor-tant ones, had to be left behind. The paintingswere loaded in ambulance wagons, started on theirhomeward way, and arrived in The Hague on the20th of November, 1815, the cannon thundering,the bells ringing, and the populace loud in demon-stration. King Willem I, the eldest son of the StadhouderWillem V, transferred by royal decree the collec-tion to the State, and in July, 1821, it was placedin the Mauritshuis. This building was built be-tween 1633 ^^d 1644 by the architect Pieter Post,after the plan of Jacob van Campen, who also de-signed the City Hall (now the Royal Palace) atAmsterdam.
