As a result of his long experience inexcavating cemeteries, M. Pilloy believed that as a rule thebody was borne to the grave side on an open bier,1 perhapscovered with a shroud, and that this display of the corpsemade a special reason for furnishing it forth with all itshabiliments and jewels. The usual position of a body on the bier, on its back in anextended position, as shown for example in Egyptian andGreek funereal pictures, was as a general rule retained in thefinal interment, and the vast majority of skeletons that havecome to light in our Anglo-Saxon cemeteries are lying in thisposition with the arms down by the sides.
