mployed by the Teutoniccraftsman these occur very seldom but the fact of their occa-sional appearance is sufficient to indicate the floral origin ofthe ornament. In Anglo-Saxon art such exceptional treatmentof the motive occurs on the highly important equal armedfibulae already noticed (p. 271). The Kempston examplePI. xxxvii, 7 (p. 247) does not show it, but a large and hand-some piece now at Audley End, a product of the LittleWilbraham explorations in Cambridgeshire,1 exhibits it to fulladvantage. As used on the bow, see PL cliv, 4 (p. 561), theornament shows no plant character but on the head and foot,if the parts are so to be termed, the tendrils are freely dis-played in true classical fashion. The piece in question will befound figured PI. cliv, 4. (p. 561). LIX facing p. 317 SAUCER BROOCHES, ETC., WITH SCROLL PATTERNS

It has been figured PL xlix, 2 (p. 281) andnoticed from the points of view of form and technique. Ithas a pierced and vandycked edge and an S shaped patternstamped on the band next the outer border, but the chiefornament is the foliage scroll with the characteristic offshoots. For floral ornament proper with indication of the shape ofleaves we have to go to one or two quite exceptional piecesalready figured and discussed in connection with similarmotives on the coins, PH. v, 12 ; ix, 4, 6 (p. 103). The writerreally knows of very little else of the kind found in any of thepresumably pagan cemeteries, and the significance of the absenceof these motives from the tomb furniture has
