When we reached the depot atSyracuse, the train was greeted by the most impressive demonstrationI have ever seen, Wrightson re-calls. The train shed was covered withthe National colors and black fes-toons. An immense, silent, thronghad waited hours to glimpse thecortege. There were five cars in the train,carrying members of the Lincolnfamily, Government officials, thecasket and newspapermen. Theywere the first Pullmans to run on aNew York Central track. Tlie front of the engine bore aportrait of the martyred President.At sight of the picture and thedraped locomotive, throngs alongthe track drew back. Some wavedsmall flags. Others wept openly.When the train had passed theystepped to the track and watchedit fade into the distance. Wrightson, SS, is nearly blindand retired from railroading after53 years service. On 96th Birthday, Railroader Tells Piloting Train of Mourners As he celebrated his 96th birthdaytoday, George E. Buck, veteran rail-road man of Santa Monica, told howhe was the one-man crew of aspecial train bearing mournersfrom Decatur, 111, to the funeralof Abraham Lincoln, martyredpresident of the United States, atSpringfield, 111, just after the closeof the Civil war. I was running a work train backin the 60s for the Toledo. Wabashand Western railroad, he said. Theorder came through to make up athree-car special train for themourners. It seemed like everybodywanted to go. I took the tickets,fired the engine and then drovethe train to Springfield. Buck ran away from home towork on a railroad when he was12 years old. He retired 58 yearslater. He claims to be the oldestliving Master Mason in the UnitedStates.
