During aconsiderable portion of the eighteenth centui-y, it was divided by partitions, not reaching so highas to interfere with the general perspective of the roof. Among the purposes for which smallportions of it were thus applied, was a shop for Creech, the celebrated bookseller; booths for afew dealers in various commodities, and a small tavern, occupied by the renowned Peter William-son, whose adventures from the time when he was kidnapped in Aberdeen, to his return, aflerhaving been domesticated as an American Indian, form a romance of no common interest.
