s; racemes lax, bracteate; pedicels long, filiform, bracteolate;corollas ovato-companulate, with acute lacinise and included anthers. Theflower is white, the calyx green, the berry globular and of a bluish-blackcolour. It varies greatly in the form of the leaves, as well as in stature, sometimes attaining a height of six or seven feet. Huckleberries form a portion of the food of many birds, as well as ofvarious quadrupeds. Of the former, I may mention in particular the WildTurkey, several species of Grouse, the Wild Pigeon, the Turtle-dove, someLoxias, and several Thrushes. Among the latter, the Black Bear standspre-eminent, although Racoons, Foxes, Opossums, and others destroy greatquantities. When the season is favourable, these berries are so thicklystrewn on the twigs, that they may be gathered in large quantities, and asthey become ripe, numerous parties resort to the grounds in which they arefound, by way of frolicking, and spend the time in a very agreeable manner. Wti.l»,i> I .. Ui** Mated *<»i*u J 1 1^-, 103 NASHVILLE SWAMP-WARBLER. - Helinaia rubricapilla, Wils.PLATE CXIII.—Male and Female. I have shot only three or four birds of this species, and these were all thatI ever met with. I found them in Louisiana and Kentucky. A few speci-mens belonging to Mr. Titian Peale of Philadelphia, and which he, withhis usual kindness, lent me for a few days, to compare their colouring withmy drawings and notes, were the only others that I have seen. It is probablehe had procured them in Pennsylvania, although I cannot now recollect ifthis was really the case. The flight of this little bird is short, light, and entirely similar to that ofthe other species of this genus already described. Its food consists of insectsand larvae, which it procures by searching diligently and actively amongstthe leaves and buds of low trees. It does not pursue insects on wing. Withthe exception of a few low, eagerly repeated, creaking notes, I have notheard any sound
