The boat had a hot fight in March, 1863, when it tried topass the Confederate batteries at Port Hudson. A heavy fogprevailed, so dense not an object could be seen; they lost theirbearings, and ran into shore right under the guns of one oftheir heaviest batteries. They were the recipients of 250 shots,which tore the boat from one end to the other, but the gloomof the fog proved a blessing, after all, as it enabled the crewto take to their boats and escape, after setting their sloop on fire. In 1870 he was given his command, when he did good workon the Narragansett. Until 1876 he surveyed the Pacific coast,when he became inspector of lighthouses. This position he filled until 1893, when he became amember of the lighthouse board. It was not until February 28, 1896, that he received thecommission of Commodore, and in January, 1898, he was placedin command of the Asiatic squadron. But it remained for him to eclipse all records in his daringfight at Manila, which is probably the greatest naval battle everfought, and ranks its commander among those names that willnever be forgotten.
