The Atlanta campaign, which had added to General Sher-mans everlasting renown, had lost to the Union cause one of itsbravest generals—the brilliant McPherson, who lost his life byventuring into the woods almost alone, where he was shot bythe Confederates, and his horse dashed into the Union linesbleeding, but riderless. The Confederate vessel Alabama, commanded by RaphaelSemmes, was at Cherbourg, France. She had been cruisinground for two years, preying upon American commerce. The lattersent a polite request to Winslow, asking him not to leave thosewaters, as he intended to fight him. This was exactly CaptainWinslows wish. On Sunday, June 19, the Alabama went outof the harbor with flying colors, only to be lured off eight miles from the coast, by Captain Win-slow, who then turned and attackedthe enemy. After the Kearsargebegan the battle, the firing was ter-rific and her shots told heavily.Captain Winslows shells cut themizzenmast of the Alabama in two.The crew were half of them killedby a shell, and the gunners hadbeen swept away. After an hoursbattle, it was seen that the Ala-bama was sinking, her officersstruck their colors, and threw theswords, that would no longer availagainst their adversary, into the sea.Captain Winslow lowered boatsfrom his vessel to save the remain-ing crew of the Alabama, whensuddenly her stern went down, herbow was tossed in
