Apia consists of a long and rather straggling village, stretched alongthe shore of a crescent-shaped bay; like most of these South Sea islandports, it is concealed by the cocoa palms and other trees peculiar tothe tropics, and many of the houses are so well covered by the verdurethat the visitor cannot make outtheir position until he is close uponthem. Back of the town, which con-tains two or three hundred storesand residences, the horizon is filledwith richly green hills, which riseone upon the other to a height ofnearly five thousand feet.
