In this apartmentwere five trees between six and eight feet high,placed in ornamental stands, the trees being imitationfirs, and the leaves frosted to resemble snow. Sus-pended from the branches were hundreds of packetsfor Christmas presents. Each tree was brilliantly-illuminated with upwards of eighty coloured lights.Mr. McKay, her Majestys piper,* was in attendanceand marched round the room playing Scotch airs.The Queens private band afterwards gave a concertin the Red Drawing-room. At the close of 1847 one of the many early bio-graphers of the Prince of Wales t describes him as a light, active, fair-haired boy, with vivacityand intelligence beaming out of his bright blue eyes ;health mantling on his cheek, and a childish dignity,very pretty to witness, characterising all his move-ments in public.
