llary cancers. Differences in diagnoses have practical bearings upon prognosis. Thus, in Warrenshands_only 7 per cent, of the cases of medullary carcinoma operated upon recovered, but 488 THE BREAST in Halsteds hands 48 per cent, recovered. Why this difference? Could it be becausethe same things were not called medullary cancer? In Warrens experience only 3per cent, of the cases were called adeno-carcinoma, and 66 per cent, of them recoveredafter operation,^but in Halsteds experience, 15.23 per cent, of the cases were called adeno-carcinoma, and 75 per cent, recovered. If we are to make deductions concerning future eventualities from the type of tumorthat is removed, there ought to be simpliiication of the nomenclature, a general agree-ment as to what things should be called, and established criteria by which the differentspecies of carcinoma can be recognized and assigned to their respective classes. The best that can be done at the present time is to say that the order of malignancy
