This axiUary extension may be entirely separate from the corpus SURGICAL ANATOMY OF THE BREAST 27 mammce, a.nd a primary tumor arising in this isolated portion of parenchyma would seemto be of axillary rather than mammary origin. The anterior thoracic sub-group of lymph nodes is practically in contact with thebreast when it extends in this manner around and beneath the axillary edge of the greatpectoral muscle, the deep fascia alone intervening. The upper serrations of the serratusmagnus muscle are separated from the axillary extension by the deep pectoral fascia. In its lower inner portion, the breast overlaps the point of origin of the greater pectoral, the upper portion of the rectus abdominalis from which the former takes origin, and Pectoral a/rff. ^ixiUar// area Mpple^Serratus ma^^ms area Fig. 10.—Outline of area of the chest wall covered by the breast. (Leaf.) overlaps to some extent the external oblique muscle where it arises from the sixth andseventh ribs. The major portion of the lower outer quadrant of the breast is situated over theupper portion of the aponeurosis of the external oblique and the fifth, sixth and seventhdigitations of the serratus magnus muscles, while only a small segment behind and to theouter side of the nipple overlies the pectoralis major muscle. It follows that the onlyquadrant of the breast that is entirely supported by the latter muscle, is the uppermner one, and that approximately one-third of the organ extends beyond the axillaryborder of this muscle.j 28 THE BREAST Stroma and Adipose Tissue.—The corpus mammas, as we have stated, is enclosedbetween the two layers of the superficial fascia, which form its so-called capsule. Theselayers are continuous with the lamellae that subdivide the organ
