Sterile pads made of non-absorbent cotton covered with several thicknesses of gauzeare placed in the axilla in sufficient number to hold the arm at an angle of approximately70 degrees. The incision is covered with sterile gauze and a figure-of-eight bandage isapplied to include the shoulder of the affected side, the axilla and the chest. Thisbandage, which should be 6 inches in width, is composed of eight thicknesses of gauze. The patients body must be well protected with blankets on her return from theoperating room.
