is everywhere divisible into a superficial fibro-adiposelayer in which the cutaneous vessels and nerves ramify and a deep fibro-membranouslayer to which the superficial layer is more or less firmly attached; the superficial fasciais loosely bound to the underlying deep fascia. In certain parts of the body, the deep layer of the superficial fascia presents an in-creased density and has certain peculiarities of distribution and attachment that are ofgreat surgical importance, as for example in the perineum—Colles fascia—the attach- SURGICAL ANATOMY OF THE BREAST 29 ment of which determines the course of urine extravasated from the ruptured bulbo-membraneous urethra, and on the anterior surface of the thigh where the attachmentdetermines the direction of a hernial protrusion through the saphenous opening.
