We here find a few little-altered specimens of the smaller houses or * Preston Tower, Vol. i. p. 317 ; Magdalens House, Vol. ii. p. 545 ; NorthfieldHouse, Vol. II. p. 183. In addition to these there is Old Preston House, part ofwhich still remains, the residence of Lord Grange (see Carlyles Autohiography); alsoBankton, the residence of Colonel Gardiner, who was killed at the hattle of Prestonpans.
