Previous to the suppression of religious houses, therectory belonged to the Abbot and Convent of St. Peter,Westminster: but coming then to the crown, it was after-wards given by Queen Mary to the Bishop of London, andhis successors for ever. After the fire of 1666, when St.Clements church was destroyed, this parish was united tothat of St. Martin Orgar; and St. Clements Church, 1 See Gentlemans Magazine, Vol. V. If, then, this be the same Clement of whom wehave spoken, he must have lived to be a very old man. 4 ST.
