It is confirmed by what Herodotustells us of Sesosfcris, who, in his victoriousmarch through Asia, to express his con-tempt for those people who had offeredlittle or no resistance to his arms, set upstelce in their lands, and carved thereonthe converse of this symbol. II. 102. 7 The occurrence of this symbol on thewalls of Pelasgic cities may be explainedby the worship that ancient people paid tothe phallic Hermes. It was they who in- 120 FIESOLE. (chap. xli. Following the line of walls some hundred yards to the east—you formerly came to an arch standing ten or twelve feet inadvance of them. It was a structure of different character, andapparently of later date ; for the masonry was much less massivethan in the city walls. This picturesque monumentwas thrown down in 1848 by the Fiesolani themselves, and thepiers on which the arch rested alone remain to mark its site. The woodcut shows it as it was more than thirty years ago. Beyond this you can trace the walls in fragments, mixed withthe small work of modern repairs, running in a straight line for troducecl it into Athens, and the rest ofGreece, and also into Sainothrace (Herod.II. 51, confirmed by the coins of Lcmnosand Imbros, says Midler, Etrusk. cinl. 2,3) ; and probably also, with the mysteriousrites of the Cabiri, into Etruria and otherparts of Italy. Yet the worship of thissymbol was by no means confined to theclassic nations of antiquity. It seems tohave prevailed also among the nations ofthe far East ; and recent researches leadus to conclude that it held even among theearly people of the New World. Stephens Yucatan, I. pp. 181, 434.
