INTRODUCTORY REMARKS. The Taming of the Shrew was firstprinted in the folio collection of Shak-speres Plays in 1623. In 1594 A plesantconceited Historic called the Taming of aShrew was printed. This play, it isthought, preceded Shaksperes Taming ofthe Shrew. This comedy of some unknownauthor opens with an Induction, the charac-ters of which are a Lord, Slie, a Tapster,Page, Players, and Huntsmen. The inci-dents are precisely the same as those of theplay which we call Shaksperes. The sceneof The Taming of a Shrew is laid atAthens; that of Shaksperes at Padua. TheAthens of the one and the Padua of theother are resorts of learning. Alfonso, amerchant of Athens (the Baptista of Shak-spere), has three daughters, Kate, Emelia,and Phylema. Aurelius, son of the Dukeof Cestus (Sestos), is enamoured of one,Polidor of another, and Ferando (the Pe-trucio of Shakspere) of Kate, the Shrew.The merchant hath sworn, before he willallow his two younger daughters to be ad-dressed by suitors, that His el
