l Norte County, but also in Siskiyou andTrinity counties. Most of the copper deposits of this county, however, areeither in the peridotite, or are more or less closely connectedwith it. In many cases the shoots of ore that have beendeveloped in former years are limited in extent, few of themhaving been proven to contain more than a few hundred, oreven a few tons of ore. They are generally irregular, or elseconsist of a series of bunches or lenses of ore arranged along azone which is itself only vaguel)^ definable. The ore is oftenof very high grade, consisting of copper glance, black and redoxides, carbonates, and native copper. Pyrrhotite is oftenfound, and in some cases magnetic iron or chromite accom-panies the ores of copper. Chalcopyrite is not common. Goldand silver are almost universally reported as accompanyingthe copper and correspondingly increasing its value. The transportation of ore from the minesto the landing varies in each case, but it has generally rangedbetween $2.50 and $10 per ton. The following are some of the more important copper minesand claims in the various districts of Del Norte County: LOW DIVIDE DISTRICT. Alta Group.—Two patented claims, owned by the Baconestate, San Francisco; not worked since 1865; located inSec. 35, T. 18 N., R. I E., H. M. Aurora Group.—Four claims two miles east of the Alta;owned by T. J. McXamara, of Crescent City, and others. Theore of this mine is reported to contain considerable gold inaddition to the copper contents.
