Signsof wealth and prosperity appeared everywhere; citiesarose beneath the shelter of the camps; villas studdedthe vale of the Ouse, and often the spade turns upunexpected treasures that tell of the extent of Romancivilization. Soon, however, the legionaries were withdrawn, and thehills and dales of the county were left a prey to the Pictsand Scots. And then came the English. From Sleswickthey sailed in their long ships to the mouth of theHumber.
