rt lasted till1689, but for some considerable period before that datehad lost its original importance. During the Reformation period, the people of Shrop-shire were largely content to go quietly on their way,letting others alone, and asking only to be let alonethemselves. They saw with some dismay the destructionof the beautiful abbeys, for which the county was famous.Shrewsbury Abbey was one of the most important inEngland. It was a Benedictine house, to which orderBromfield and Morville priories belonged. Wenlock wasa Cluniac house, and Buildwas and Whiteladies wereCistercian, the former for monks, the latter for nuns.There were five Augustinian houses, the most importantbeing Haughmond and Lilleshall; and the famousHalesowen Abbey belonged to the Praemonstratensian•order. All these fell victims to the monarchs greed, or,as some assert, had lived their day and served theirpurpose, and were no longer needed.
