Second step. The sound is passed slowly into the uterine cavity. The direction taken bythe sound is carefully noted. The patient is in the dorsal position. THE UTERINE SOUND g7 polyps, malignant growths, and retained placental tissue. Whenpossible to use the finger it is always preferred to the sound. 5. The Thickness of the Uterine Wall. By passing the soundinto the uterus and with one hand over the abdomen, the fingers ofthe other hand in the rectum, it is possible under favorable con-ditions to make a fair estimate of the thickness of the uterine wall. Contraindications to the Use of the Sound. 1. Menstruation.Though not an absolute contraindication, it is better to delay theprocedure until the intermenstrual period. 2. Pregnancy is an absolute contraindication for the passage ofthe sound.
