RUG WORK OR SMYRNA KNITTING THE DICTIONARY OF NEEDLEWORK. 369 silk, or with contrasting shades. The purses are generallynetted in Plain Netting, but single and treble DiamondNetting, or Cross Netting, can be used upon them ifwished. To net a Gentlemans Purse, 10 inches in length:Use Mesh No. 13, and five skeins of coarse Netting silk.Work eighty Loops into the Foundation Loop, and netrows of Plain Netting until the 10 inches required aremade. The same purse, if made with fine Netting silk,will require one hundred Loops to commence with. Sewup the sides of the purse, leaving a space for the opening;Buttonhole round this opening with the Netting silk,then Tack it up, and place the purse upon a piece of wood,of a barrel shape, to stretch it; damp the Netting,and leaveit on the wood until dry, when take it off, untack theopening, sew up the ends, and add the tassels and therings.
