Repeat the pattern untilthe size required is made, then join a piece of silk to the top and bottom as a border, and make it straightat one side, and vandyked at the other, so as to fit intothe angles of the pattern for the sides; cut some halfhexagons, and fit them in, and finish with a plain straightborder. (3). The pattern shown in Fig. G52 is intended tobe used in making counterpanes, and other large articles,and should be worked with cretonnes or gaily-colouredchintzes. It is made with squares of two different sizes,and of pointed oblongs. To work: Cut out in tin asquare of 6 inches, and form a face 1£ inches in lengthat each corner, by cutting away the point of the square.

Cut from variouscoloured chintzes a number of small squares, 1J inchesin size, and from a coloured chintz of one shade, thepointed oblongs which make 6 inches from point topoint, 2k inches wide, and 3k inches upon each Bide;join five of the small squares together, place the lightest- 3*4 THE DICTIONARY OF NEEDLEWORK. coloured square iu the centre, surround it with fourof a darker shade, and fit into the four angles that arethus made the points of four of the ohlongs, and intothe four comers of the outer squares, the angles of fourof the large squares, which have heen so cut as to joinon to the small squares, while their straight sides corre-spond with the straight sides of the ohlong; join thepieces together, so that every large square is surroundedwith the ornamental border made by the ohlong and smallsqua
