Before using, the feathers undergoa process of washing and purification, so as not only tocleanse, but to free them from any unpleasant odour.Down is sold by the pound, the white being regarded assuperior to the grey. That of the eider duck is the bestto be procured for ruffs for the neck, mulls, linings ofhoods, and trimmings for infants cloaks. Opera cloaksare also made of the white swans down.
