This individual was a hypospadiacmale, but to his misfortune was brought up as a girl. Imperfections of this kind in the external genital organsare associated with modifications of the secondary sexualcharacters. The distribution of hair on the pubes may resem-ble the female type; often it corresponds to that of a male.Menstruation depends on the co-existence of a uterus; of 56 DISEASES OF WOMEN. this more will be stated later on. The mammae may be aslarge as those of a woman; more often they are of the maletype. The hair on the head is no guide, for if an indi-vidual has been trained as a boy it is short; if a girl it willusually be long. The presence or absence of hair on theface varies. Onthe other hand a uterus may be associated with a perfectpenis and testes. The presence of a uterus does not enableus to decide the sex in a doubtful case. In questionablecases of sex the only absolute test is the genital glands.The presence of ovaries is decisive proof of a female; testesindicate the male; and, as accurate discrimination between Uterus.
