oss which a piercingwind was blowing, which is characteristic of thisdistrict. It is an interesting little place, and is muchfrequented by many of the Miao (aboriginal tribes)in their picturesque dress. The Wha Miaos (= floweryMiao) are so called because of the colour of theirdress, which is dyed blue and red by an ingeniousmethod of stencilling the cloth, using beeswax tomake the design. They are totally unlike the Chinese,the only point of similarity being the wearing of thepigtail by the men ; but they have a religion andlanguage of their own, and keep absolutely aloof fromthe Chinese. The women, when married, wear theirhair erected into a horn, which sticks out from theside of the head ; but as soon as they have children thehorn is erected straight up from the top. They arevery shy people, but as I was anxious to get a sketchof a woman, I got the missionary to persuade her tosing while I made a few notes.
