y walls, and thelower limb (which is at a higher elevation) project-ing beyond the line of the walls to a distance of atleast 500 feet. At present there is a considerablespace between the ends of the wall and the palacemound; ^ but anciently it is probable that they eitherabutted on the mound, or were separated from itmerely by gateways. The mound, or at any ratethe part of it which projected beyond the walls, wasfaced with hewn stone,^ carried perpendicularly fromthe plain to the top of the platform and even beyond,so as to form a parapet protecting the edge of theplatform. On the more elevated portion of themound—that which projected beyond the walls— See Fergussons Palaces, pp. 234,235. « Supra, pp. 255, 256. ^ The K)\osr-Su, which runs onthis side olthe Khorsabad ruins, oftenoverflows its banks, and pours its waters against the palace mound. The gaps north and south of themound may have been caused by itsviolence. See the woodcut, supra, p. 349. Chap. VI. KHORSABAD PALACE. 359

Plan of the Palace of Sara;ou, Khorsabad. 360 THE SECOND MONARCHY. Chap. VI. stood the palace, consisting of three groups of build-ings, the principal group lying towards the moundsnorthern angle. On the lower portion of theplatform wer^ several detached buildings, the mostremarkable being a huge gateway, or propyljBum,through which the entrance lay to the palace fromthe city. Beyond and below this, on the level plain ofthe city, the first or outer portals were placed,^ givingentrance to a court in front of the lower terrace. A visitor approaching the palace, had in the firstplace to pass through these portals. They wereornamented with colossal human-headed bulls oneither side, and probably spanned by an arch above, the archivolte being covered with enamelled bricksdisposed in a pattern. Eeceived within the portals, the visitor found himself in front of a long wall ofsolid stone masonry, the revetement of the lower ter-race, which rose from the outer court to a height of atleast twenty
