the upper side.Stipules broadly ovate, acute, densely villous, semi-amplexicaul. Peduncle terminal, about fourinches long, dividing into two or three compact clusters, with a bractea at the base of eachdivision: bracteas small, ovate, acute. Male flowers 4-parted, white, with a slight blush ofpink, two external rounded, concave, densely hairy beneath; two internal smaller, obovato-oblong. This very distinct species of Begonia was received at the Birmingham BotanicGarden from the Royal Botanic Garden at Berlin, in 1838. It is a stove shrub, VOL. III. NO. XXXV. JANUARY, 1840. Y 162 BEGONIA MEYER!. erect and compact in its mode of growth; and although the flowers are notbrilliant, is a very desirable plant, its handsome foliage making a very strikingvariety in the stove. It is a slow-growing species, and requires to be potted in amixture of loam and peat with a little sand. It may be increased by cuttings,which strike freely, although from its slow growth they are produced butsparingly.
