of Scituate. Mr. Sharpless, whenin America, made a number of portraits of distinguishedpeople. These are still valued for their character and truth. 130. CHARLES CUSHING (John --~ Matthew ) wasborn in Scituate, Mass., 13 Aug., 1734. He married, 25Aug., 176S, Elizabeth, sister of Governor Increase Sumner.She w^as born 14 June, 1743, and died 31 May, 1817. Hedied 7 Nov., 1810. Graduated from Harvard College in 1755.He was educated as a lawyer,and appointed first SherifFof Lin-coln Co., which office he held both before and during the Revo-lution, and also for many years after. He resided at Pown-alboro and in 1776, when the Maine Militia was reorganized,was appointed to command the Eastern Regiment, with thetitle of Co.onel. In January 1777, he was made Brigadierfor Lincoln Co. He made himself especially obnoxious tothe loyalists by his vigilance in the discharge of his duties assheriff and military officer, and towards the close of the war,

Mrs. Hannah Gushing wife of Chief Justice William Gushing. GUSHING FAMILY 9 5 in 1781, he (then a Brigadier General) was seized at nightby a loyaHst party under John Jones, a violent Tory, takenfrom his bed, compelled to hurry on his clothes and was car-ried away to the British army at Castine, where he wasretained for some time as a prisoner. His functions as She-riff and Brigadier General seem to have ceased soon afterthis time when he removed to Boston and he next appears asClerk of the Courts in Suffolk and Nantucket Countiesin 1783, which office he held to his death, in 1810. The factof his occupying responsible public stations from the age of26 to his death continuously both under the royal and repu-blican governments, a period of 50 years, is sufficient proofof his ability, faithfulness and integrity.
