bly more impressive in its ruins thanit was when it was draped with Hellenism, and, to me at least,remains like the aqueduct at Pont du Gard § and the Bridge ofAlcantara II seem truer witnesses of the grandeur of Rome thanall the marbles in all the museums. The celebrated Castle ofSt. Angelo, which still keeps watch and ward over the Tiber, isnothing but the core of Hadrians tomb—the Moles Hadriani—once clad in a vestment of Greek marbles and covered withGreek ornament.^ The Pantheon, in spite of the inscriptionwhich ascribes it to Agrippa, is proved by the marks on itsbricks to be a restoration of Hadrians time. The plan is thatof a dome so constructed that if the sphere were complete itwould rest upon the earth. It is not, however, a true dome,since the roof was built as a cap upon a solid core afterwardsremoved.
