The country around Florence is most beautiful;and excursions, especially to Fiesole and Vallom-brosa, should, if the traveller have time, not beneglected. Nor should he omit to see the manlygame of Pallone played; it is now almost peculiar to 120 TURIN TO FLORENCE. Florence, and may usually be seen without the PortaPinti. It was an ancient Roman game, requiringgreat skill and vigour, by which a large, inflatedball made of leather is struck over a line whichdivides the players: the blow is given from the forearm, which is shielded by a wooden guard, coveredwith knobs, into which the arm is thrust. Whilst the traveller is in Florence, it is desirablethat he should know, that many articles, the posses-sion of which he may consider comforts, can be hadthere of Mr. Lowe ; such as, genuine English medi-cines, drugs, and soda powders, from Savory andMoore; stationary, papers, colours, pencils, sketch-books, &c. from Waller of Fleet-street; and othergoods from the first houses in London.
