first, examples of pointed arches. The vestibule to the chapter-roomshews an instance where the form is very decided and very perfect, yet allits mouldings and members are of the circular style and character. This archis shewn in Plate iv. b, a, and it forms nearly an equilateral triangle fromthe points of springing with the apex. The plan, view, and section of thisapproach to the chapter-room, will clearly illustrate its design and archi-tecture; whilst the Ground Plan, at p ; the view, Plate hi.; the elevations,Plate iv. a, c; and the section, Plate ix. a, will display the arrangement, 1 This building is illustrated and described in The Architectural Antiquities of GreatBritain, vol. iii. 46 BRISTOL CATHEDRAL. size, architectural character, and ornamental details of the chapter-room.The annexed wood cut shews the forms of the capitals, bases, columns,rib-mouldings, string course, and unusual tracery on the walls at the centreof the north side of this room. 7\ H. Clarke, del. 6. (PUliams, sr. It will be proper to remark that the interior view, Plate hi. has somevariations from the present state and appearance of the chapter-room. Anew boarded floor has been raised about two feet six inches above theoriginal floor, whereby the stone seat, which extended round the room, andunited with the walls, is entirely covered. Large openings have been madein the south and east walls, in which common sash window-frames areintroduced, and the whole interior surface is covered with repeated coatsof white-wash. All these things not only greatly disfigure, but tend todestroy the true architectural character and effect of an ancient apartment, which, in its original state, must have been one of the most interesting of thekind in the kingdom, and perhaps in Europe. Though it has been thussadly barbarised, it may be easily restored, and thus rendered an object CHAPTER-ROOM ELDER LADY CHAPEL. 47 of admiration and delight to every lover of Christian Architectur
