The Deed of Declaration contained the names of a hundredpreachers who were to be in the eye of the law what Wesleyhimself had been for forty years in relation to his societiesand trust property. The Legal Conference 975 retary, station the preachers, admit preachers on trial andinto full connection, and maintain the discipline and generaloversight of the societies. The term of appointments foritinerant preachers was limited to three years. The deedwas not kept in reserve until Wesleys death, as some writershave assumed, but five months after its execution it wasacted upon at the Conference by the election of two preachersto fill vacancies in the Hundred, and by the formal signingof the Minutes. Wesley was chosen president year by yearuntil his death. Five or six preachers who were annoyed bythe omission of their names from the Hundred severedtheir connection with Wesley, but at the Conference of 1785all the preachers present signed a document approving bothof the substance and design of the deed.
