North-east Africa.(Illustrated from live specimen lent by Mr. Charles Jamrach.)Stunius chalylhius (Russ), Lamprotornis chalyhaa, Lamprotornis niteus el chaybaus, Lamprolornis gullatus, LamprocoVniscyanotis, Lainprocolius Ahyssinicus. English dealers name—Green Glossy Starling. German name—GriinschvviinzigerGlanzstar. This Glossy Starling is of the same size as our European Starling, of dark bluish-green orgreenish-blue colour, according to the light in which the shining plumage is seen. A spoton the cheeks and one on the wings are of bluish tint, and the lower parts appear purple ifseen in a strong light. Male and female are alike. Food, like other Starlings. The firstspecimen of this bird was presented to the Zoological Gardens as long ago as 1850, and in1872 some v/ere bred there. The nest is built in hollow trees or large nest-boxes. The Purple-headed Glossy Starling is slightly larger than the Green Glossy Starlingand his European relative, and the most brilliant of his family. The head and lower bodyare purply violet-blue, the throat is somewhat more violet, the back of the neck more blue.Wings and back are metallic green, and the tail purple.
