The question of the ad-visability of forbidding ministers to unitewith secret societies, notably the Ma-sonic fraternity, came up at this time fordecision. The North Ohio Conferencehad, in the year 1845, passed such arecommendation, but several ministershad refused to consider it as binding, andwere thereupon found guilty of imprudentconduct. The action of the local body,however, was not sustained by the Con-ference, which declared that it was un-authorized by the Discipline. The death of the venerable Heddingand the resignation of Hamline had de-pleted the ranks of the bishops. Thefour new men who were elected weretaken respectively from the Philadelphia,New Hampshire, and Indiana Confer-ences.
