The following year, 1825, seems tohave passed without any meeting of thecollege of bishops; but in April, 1S2(>,four of them came together in theQuaker City, where Bishops Georgeand Hedding were presiding at the An-nual Conference. They met in the roomof Bishop McKendree, who had arrivedfrom the South, with Soule, to attendthe meeting; Bishop Roberts was absent.A matter they had to settle was theelection of a representative to the BritishConference—an appointment which theyhad been authorized to make by a reso-lution of the General Conference. Theindividual fixed upon by Roberts andSoule was William Capers, whomMcKendree now nominated. Georgeand Hedding, however, objected toCapers, because he was a slave-owner,and desired either to postpone theelection, or to have Wilbur Fisk orEzekiel Cooper sent in his place. At this time Capers was a great powerin the South. Born in South Carolina 462 The Illustrated History of Methodism.
