Noah Websterwas born in West Hartford, Connecticut, October 16, 1758, and servedin a company of militia raised to oppose General Burgoyne. He grad-uated from Yale in 1778, and first came into prominence with his spellingbook, of which sixty-two million copies were issued. The first dictionary waswritten in the handwriting here shown.
