eading habit, so that it is well suited to hang down over stonesor rocks. Leaves dark green, shining, cordate, serrate, slightlydowny. Flowers in one-sided, narrow, leafy panicles, whichsometimes measure more than a foot in length. The branchesof the panicle are hairy, and bear each from three to five flowerswhen the plants are vigorous. Calyx covered with glandularhairs; corolla not quite an inch and a half long, rich dull red ;the tube almost cylindrical ; the upper lip straight, nearly flat, slightly 2-lobed; the lower three parted, spreading at rightangles to the upper. It has so little the appearance of a Pentstemon that it maybe expected to be regarded hereafter as a distinct genus. It is a very desirable, hardy plant. Sept. 12, 1849. NEW PLANTS, ETC., FROM THE SOCIETYS GARDEN.

One common mode of proceeding is to make extensive use ofhardy shrubs too early in the forciug season. The objections tothis are, that the display produced by exciting plants at a seasonso very unnatural to them, is strikingly inferior to what theywould create a few weeks later; and a
