oves to be as destituteof beauty as the male is conspicuous for it. The catkins areshort, green, and, at a little distance from the bush, are not tobe observed. To Botanical Gardens the plant is an acquisition,as it is to Horticulture, inasmuch as it will probably now ripenfruit, and thus afford a ready means of propagation. It is pos-sible, also, that the deep purple berries, with long clusters ofwhich the plant is loaded in North-West America, may proveornamental; but of that we can at present have no certainknowledge. March 16, 1850.vol. v. l 138 NEW PLANTS, ETC., 12. Galanthus plicatus. Bieberstein, Flora Taurico-Cau-casica, Supp., p. 255. Received from Dr. Fischer, from the Imperial BotanicGarden, St. Petersburgh. This beautiful Snowdrop, although long cultivated in gar-dens, is hardly known to the public. It is from the Caucasus, whence it seems to have found its way to Constantinople aboutthe year 1592. Aucher Eloy also appears to have met with iton the borders of the Black Sen.

(Galanthus plicatus.) There appears to be no doubt as to its specific difference fromthe common Snowdrop, its leaves being very much broader, and, FROM THE SOCIETYS GARDEN. 139 as it were, plaited, not flat, its flowers being larger, and thegreen on the petals far more conspicuous. In a horticulturalpoint of view it is a much finer thing than the old Snowdrop, just as hardy, and as easily managed. March 3, 1850. 13. CvANOTIS VITTATA.* Received from an unknown correspondent, supposed tohave been obtained from Mexico. This plant, known in some hothouses under the name of Trades-cantia zebrina, is an undoubted Cyanotis, with which genus itcorresponds in all essential circumstances. I do not, however, find that the two ovules are collateral, one being erect and theother suspended, a peculiarity ascribed by Dr. Robert Brownto the seeds : but I have not been able to examine the ripefruit. The stems, which are much branched, lie prostrate, or hang-down from the shelf on which the plant is place
